It sews through a jean seam with no problems, as long as you have the right needle in.
Very easy to use, adjustable pressure foot for thick to thin fabrics or so you can glide the fabric easily.
Great buttonholes, and very easy to make the holes.
I recommend going to a retailer and having them either let you play with it or demonstrate it for you.
Where i got mine demonstrated the whole machine, all its features.
The user manual is very easy to read and learn what you are doing.
I make stuffed animals on it.
I have even sewed very sheer wire ribbon on it, an made buttonholes on the sheer ribbon with absolutely no problem.
I owned a brother before this one and hated it.
I never owned the prelude, but i recommend going to a retailer and telling them exactly what you will be doing with the machine.
It was well worth the money.
A sewing machine service and sale center often have well serviced used models and will back those models with their own warranties.
From what i seen on the prelude its just the old version of the emerald.
Seems to have all the same stitches and functions as mine.
So if you are buying the prelude from a dealer i would ask what incentives come with it compared to a new one.
I also got a great upgrade program with mine, if i feel i need more of a machine within the next year the purchase price of my sewing machine is applied to my new one.
